I am writing to express my grave concerns at reports that Margarita Island (northeastern Venezuela) continues to allow a traveling "dolphin show" owned by the company Water Land Mundo Marino to continue its exploitation of cetaceans, in spite of it lacking the correct documentation to operate, and that this company is now seeking a zoo permit to handle terrestrial animals too.

For the last 15 years, Water Land 's "traveling show" has generated controversy around the world. In Guatemala they abandoned two dolphins in a filthy dug out hole with no filtration system to die of starvation and heat. Just in time, the Guatemalan authorities turned the near-dead cetaceans over to a rescue and rehabilitation organization. The dolphins had not eaten in 10 days, but miraculously they were revived, rehabilitated in a sea pen, and they were released back into the ocean where they belong. Soon after, it was discovered that Water Land had falsified its paperwork. They have files in courts in Guatemala, Colombia and even in Venezuela. They have received strong opposition to their operations in the West Indies, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Peru and Guatemala.

This traveling dolphin show is the last of its kind on the planet, and may be the most abusive and irresponsible towards the dolphins of its kind. We are also very concerned at reports that their care of terrestrial animals kept in an amusement park on Margarita Island appears to be also very irresponsible, with noise and lights at night, together with concerts and plays and cages that resemble zoos from the last century.

The dolphins involved in these traveling shows are placed under extreme stress, and it is unconscionable that Venezuela would allow their transport and continued confinement under these conditions in infrastructure that is actually property of the Venezuelan people. These noisy, stressful and relentless conditions present an extreme threat the survival of the dolphins concerned. When one of Water Land’s dolphins (Cheryl) died of heart failure in 1997, her existence was denied by the company.

For beings that are known to have befriended humans, aided fishermen and even crossed the species barrier to rescue humans in trouble, it is a sad statement of the morality of human beings to return their simple acts of kindness by trapping, confining, and endless exploitation. These are perhaps the most intelligent non-human species on the planet and deserve far better treatment and protection in their natural environment instead of the kind of activities that pose a severe threat to their welfare and survival. We respectfully urge the Venezuelan authorities to implement legislation that prohibits the continued existence of traveling dolphin shows in Venezuela and to guarantee individual identification of captive dolphins.

Sincerely,
